Myanmar has recalled its ambassador to Thailand, Zaw Zaw Soe, and reportedly summoned him back to Nay Pyi Taw for questioning over several allegations involving Myanmar migrant workers and visa arrangements.
Myanmar media, citing an unidentified source within the country’s Foreign Ministry, reported that the ambassador is being questioned over alleged links with Myanmar businesspeople in Thailand in connection with the movement of migrant workers through Kawthaung, a Myanmar town located opposite Ranong province.
The reports also allege that Zaw Zaw Soe was questioned over the issuance of visas to individuals or groups described by Myanmar authorities as being opposed to the government.
The ambassador’s recall comes following a visit to Thailand in August by Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing and the country’s commander-in-chief, Gen Ye Win Oo.
According to the same reports, Zaw Zaw Soe had met Thai Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat five days before being recalled. The meeting focused on information concerning Myanmar nationals working in Thailand, as well as proposals to establish formal channels that would allow migrant workers to send money back to Myanmar.
Details surrounding the recall and the allegations remain limited, and the reported claims have not been independently established in the information available.
