Thai Navy Deploys 30 Boats to Accelerate Floodwater Drainage
Nakhon Nayok, Thailand. — The Royal Thai Navy has deployed 30 water-pushing boats at two locations in Nakhon Nayok province as part of efforts to speed up floodwater drainage and reduce water levels in affected communities.
Twenty boats began operating at Yothaka Bridge in Ongkharak district at 8am on Wednesday, helping increase water circulation and improve drainage in the area. A further 10 boats have been stationed at Nuclear Bridge, bringing the total number of Navy vessels involved in the operation to 30.
The boats are scheduled to operate daily from 8am to 8pm until the flooding situation improves.
Navy Chief of Staff Adm Thadawut Thatpitakkul said the Navy was prepared to deploy additional water-pushing boats wherever they were needed. The Navy has more than 100 boats available for drainage operations, with 43 currently allocated to Bangkok and Nakhon Nayok, 10 designated for southern provinces and another 46 available for deployment to other affected areas.
He added that sufficient personnel were also available, with staff from different Navy units being coordinated to assist residents affected by the flooding.
Passenger boats also assist drainage efforts
Meanwhile, Family Transport (2002) Co Ltd, which operates passenger boats along Bangkok’s San Saeb canal, has deployed 26 boats to help increase water flow into the city’s drainage network.
Company owner Chaovalit Methayaprapas said 21 boats were operating along the San Saeb canal, while three others had been deployed on the Prawet canal. The vessels are being used particularly near the Rama IX-Ramkhamhaeng drainage tunnel, which channels water towards the Chao Phraya River.
The tunnel, which is approximately five metres in diameter, has the capacity to drain around 200,000 cubic metres of water per day.
Chaovalit said the boats alone could not remove all the accumulated water, but were helping accelerate the flow into the drainage tunnel. Their efforts have so far reduced the canal’s water level by approximately 30 centimetres.
The boats will remain in operation as authorities work to lower water levels further and improve the efficiency of pumping and drainage systems.
Family Transport has temporarily suspended passenger services on the San Saeb canal due to elevated water levels. Chaovalit said services could potentially resume within 48 hours if conditions return to a safe level, although no official reopening date has been announced.
The company said it would continue monitoring the situation and advised passengers to check official announcements before making travel plans.
